By the look of things, broadcast marketing may have reached its zenith and is being replaced by a softer approach, epitomized by social media marketing; an excellent example of the nature of yin and yang.
While new marketing methods such as inbound marketing, listening to social media conversations and monitoring your brand are about being open to receiving information and thus decidedly yin, yin can’t exist without yang. Keeping a balance of both will help you to get the most out of Twitter.
With that in mind, here are a few tips to help.
Yin Twitter Tips
Yin is characterized as soft, receiving, diffuse or tranquil; and is associated with water, femininity and nighttime. The following tips focus on listening, receiving information and attracting attention.
1 – Sign up for Google and Twitter alerts for your keywords, your brand name and your competitors. This can give you great insight, help you manage your reputation, and can even yield a few leads.
2 – Follow, follow, follow. Keep following new people who demonstrate a dedication to true engagement on Twitter. Seek out people in your industry by mining the Twitter lists of industry influencers, by monitoring industry keywords or hashtags, and perusing directories like WeFollow.
3 – Follow and use hashtags of topics or groups that are related to your industry or potential clients.
4 – Make sure that your Twitter profile page is interesting and informative and relates to the reason you are on Twitter to begin with. Give some personal info and a picture so followers can get to know you a little bit.
5 – Create Twitter lists that are useful to others and add people whenever possible. This will help you get listed more often and provides a great resource to your followers
6 – Subscribe to relevant, quality blogs. This will give you instant access to constantly updated information that you can link to in your tweets.
Yang Twitter Tips
Yang is hard, solid, focused or aggressive; and is associated with action, fire, the sun, masculinity and daytime. The following tips are therefore focused on action, giving and reaching out to your network.
1 – Engage – TALK TO PEOPLE on Twitter. This is arguably the most effective thing you can do on Twitter to build up your reputation and for building beneficial relationships. Have an opinion about a comment someone made? Share it as long as you remain civil and as friendly as possible. On Twitter if you don’t have something nice to say to someone, it’s better not to tweet. (Negative tweets will LOSE you followers.)
